Overview

APU’s English major equips students to make effective use of the written word. The degree provides a solid foundation in writing technique and the principles of language. Later coursework explores world and American literature, creative writing, and historical literature movements. These then provide a framework for advanced study in one of three areas of concentration.

The literature concentration focuses on the analysis and criticism of literary works, including Shakespeare, the American and British novel, contemporary literature, film, and children’s literature. The teaching concentration is tailored to students who wish to become educators, providing a solid English foundation and preparation for credentialing programs. The writing concentration prepares students for a professional writing or editing career, covering freelance magazine article writing, creative writing, public relations, and professional technical writing. English majors leave APU prepared to think critically and write compellingly.
